Competition in a repeated spatial auction market with an application to timber sales

Article Abstract:

A multi-period model of spatial competition wherein the goods are sold by an auction institution rather than a posted-price institution is presented. The model takes into account the sale of goods in a market with spatial and temporal dimensions. Data from timber sales made by the US Forest Service in the Pacific Northwest between 1980 and 1988 were used to quantify the spatial auction. The findings obtained from the auction model and their contribution to the spatial competition literature are discussed.

Loschian competition versus spatial collusion: price and welfare comparisons

Article Abstract:

Companies which use the Loschian model for their pricing decisions are competing for customers in a fixed market area. This market radius is actually related to the company's policy on prices and profits. Research on different types of pricing has shown that spatial collusion may bring in superior results to the Loschian model. Companies using spatial collusion may find they have surpluses both of consumers and of goods.

Basing-point pricing and incomplete collusion

Article Abstract:

US industries which have high transportation costs such as wood and steel have used basing-point pricing (BPP) for many years. It is now also used in the EC. BPP was felt by some observers to be uncompetitive and likely to lead to price collusion. Research has shown that BPP can induce competition when the companies are represented in each area. It is thought unlikely that collusion occurs in many markets.
