Famine analysis: a study of entitlements in Sudan, 1984-1985
Article Abstract:
Two hypotheses concerning the famine in Sudan during 1984-85 were tested. The first hypothesis states that food availability decline (FAD) caused starvation while the other hypothesis asserts that food entitlement contributed to the distributional problem of the famine. Empirical testing of the hypotheses was done by simply calculating the FAD and food entitlements for several occupational groupings in three key regions in Sudan. The results suggest that there was greater decrease in entitlement than simple food supply in Sudan.

Communal dining and the Chinese famine of 1958-1961
Article Abstract:
The Communal Dining System, considered as a symbol of Communism, imposed by Mao Zedong as part of his economic policies when he called for 'The Great Leap Forward' in Jan 1958 contributed much to the Chinese famine of 1958-1961. An estimated 30 million perished and 33 million more lost or postponed births occurred due to this tragic event which was covered up by Chinese authorities for 20 years. The economic or consumption irrationality was an aftereffect of communist hypereuphoria.

Labor market choices, earnings, and informal networks in Khartoum, Sudan
Article Abstract:
Informal hiring methods deprive potentially competent workers from employment in Khartoum, Sudan. Large private enterprises tend to hire workers due to social connections rather than on training and ability. It has been found that employers and employees usually share the same birthplace. Businesses rarely resort to advertisements in recruiting workers, preferring instead factory-gate recruitment and family or employee referrals; hence, the dearth of job opportunities.
