Interpreting lessons learned: a comment on Paula Caproni's journey into balance

Article Abstract:

I appreciate this opportunity to respond to Paula Caproni's thoughtful and personal article. I hope, in doing so, to deepen a spirit of dialogue that catalyzes new insights for both of us, and readers, on the topic of work/life balance. I want to start by commenting on Caproni's personal progress toward a more satisfying life structure as a way of summarizing some essential elements of the model of work/life issues presenting in 'Balancing Act' (Kofodimos, 1993), a work she cites as an example of the work/life balance literature. Next I will discuss several aspects of Caproni's article that I believe add value to the work/life discourse. Then I'll talk about some ways in which she seems to have missed central aspects of my work - and what this selective reading might tell us about the "lenses" we bring to the work/life discourse. I'll close by suggesting possible lessons to be drawn about work/life issues from this interchange. (Reprinted by permission of the publisher.)
