Love thy neighbor: sociability and instrumentality among Israeli neighbors
Article Abstract:
The relationships between residents of a mixed middle-class neighborhood in Tel Aviv, Israel, have been examined based on three years of fieldwork and a local survey. Three case studies are presented which examined the ambiguities and limitations of relationships existing between the neighbors. Some of these relationships have gone from daily encounters to absolute disconnection, major life plans were concealed from close neighbors and official actions were taken against some neighbors. The case studies reveal that neighborhood relationships are centered on a continuous exchange of minor services and not on personal intimacy.

Modeling a central place system with interurban transport costs and complex rural hinterlands
Article Abstract:
A spatial equilibrium model of a system of cities is developed and the spatial dimension of their hinterlands are stressed by modeling interurban transport costs and nonuniform two-dimensional rural areas. In order to identify the mechanism of forming a central place structure, the model focuses only on two levels of cities. Using the model, the factors that determine the number of cities, their sizes and location pattern, the wage rates, and prices of various goods in the system are explained.
