Jerome Shestack will assume the position of President of the American Bar Association in 1997-1998, and he is committed to promoting professionalism and public service. His commitments to civil and human rights are long-standing, and he is one of the founders of the ABA Individual Rights & Responsibilities Section. He has also worked with international human rights organizations and served as the US ambassador for human rights to the UN. Although he has taught law, he prefers litigating and helping others.

The death penalty: calling on jurisdictions to clean up their act
Article Abstract:
The resolution passed by the ABA House of Delegates calling for a moratorium on capital punishment until fairness and due process can be assured has received much opposition but has also spurred public debate. The ABA resolution is based on the racially discriminatory application of the death penalty and the reduced availability of appeals resulting from Congressional reform of habeas corpus laws. The ABA has called for states to adopt the safeguards detailed in the organization's guidelines.

Medical marijuana: a dream up in smoke?
Article Abstract:
The federal government, led by the Drug Enforcement Administration and the Office of National Drug Control Policy, has tried to stop patients from obtaining marijuana for medical use, even though research has shown help with multiple sclerosis, AIDS, cancer, nausea, pain, and glaucoma. State initiatives have gotten threats from the Department of Justice that the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) would try to pull the DEA registrations of physicians prescribing marijuana.
