U.S. agricultural biotechnology: status and prospects
Article Abstract:
Agricultural biotechnology focuses on developing techniques to improve the food production system, enhance crop protection methods and bolster crop performance. One of its earliest contributions is the use of genetic techniques for enhancing crop protection through genetic resistance to insects and disease. As new developments arose, the agricultural applications of biotechnology expanded to include the creation of value-added products, development of biological control strategies through the use of microorganisms and modification of raw materials used in food processing.

Industrial biotechnology in Austria, Germany, and Switzerland: empirical patterns of its relevance and its historical development
Article Abstract:
A study has been conducted to examine the historical development of industrial biotechnology in Austria, Germany and Switzerland. The biotechnological activities of various organizations using the technology were assessed by using cluster analysis of the database of these groups. The analysis focused on two characteristics of biotechnological activities: status and duration. The results indicated a 'supply side' bias in the whole database, wherein biotechnological activities increased with increases in the number of products and services introduced to the market.

Potential benefits of biotechnology in aquaculture: the case of growth hormones in French trout farming
Article Abstract:
Trout farming has gained a major role in France as fish demand increases and marine harvests fell short. Biotechnology is a significant factor in the effort to increase productivity of trout farms. A potentially beneficial technology is recombinant trout growth hormone (rtGH). Several scenarios are considered to assess the social benefits of rtGH and those which assume association of the technology with diversification of processed trout products offer the greatest potential. The public acceptance of genetically engineered trout will also be an important factor.
