A follow-up study of adopted children from Romania
Article Abstract:
Most of the children adopted from Romania by North American families were in institutions prior to adoption and were infants or toddlers at placement. Adoptive families report delays in gross and fine motor skills, social and language skills, and serious physical disabilities in some children. Children from institutions show developmental delays and are below the normal weight and height. This indicates a significant association between institutionalization and health, development and behavior of children.

Group therapy is an effective treatment for bereaved children. A study of an 8-week children's bereavement psychotherapy was conducted on children in the age group of 7 to 11 years, who had recently lost a parent and/or a sibling. They were divided into a treatment group and a waiting list control group. The children in the treatment group showed not only a decrease in depression and overall emotional difficulty but also a decrease in behavioral disturbances.
