Article Abstract:
The late Marie Collins McGuire Thompson was one of the most admired supporters of safe, affordable housing in the country. Launching her career in housing when she became the project manager for the Houston Housing Authority in 1942, she passionately advocated for improved housing conditions for the elderly, low-income families and American minorities. During her tenure as executive director of San Antonio Housing Authority, she studied housing for seniors, which resulted in the Victoria Plaza, an elderly housing development which became the model of other projects around the country. She was the first woman to become a Commissioner for the Public Housing Administration when she was appointed in 1961 by John F. Kennedy. She was a lifetime member of the National Assn. of Housing and Redevelopment Officials, and was conferred this organization's highest honor, the M. Justin Herman Award. She passed away at the age of 92 on Jan. 13, 1997.
