Research note: Neighborhoods as territorial units: The case of Tel Aviv-Jaffa

Article Abstract:

A study suggests a geographic information system (GIS)-based methodology for the investigation of the extent to which the inhabitants of a representative sample of city residents perceives itself as living in socially constituted neighborhood territories. Tel Aviv was selected as the object of the research as a result of the intensive restructuring the city has undergone as part of the globalization of large metropolitan cities.

Linking urban field theory with GIS and remote sensing to detect signatures of rapid urbanization on the landscape: Toward a new approach for characterizing urban sprawl

Article Abstract:

A new quantitative method to measure and visualize urban sprawl is presented by integrating GIS and remote sensing techniques and the new approach is tested in the city of Nanchang, China for detecting signatures of the three types of sprawl. The results demonstrates the robustness of the method, with each type of sprawl exhibiting different spatial and temporal signatures.

Geographic Information Systems(GIS) use advances changes in the language, practices, and examples of community planning, supporting an instrumental balanced approach to community planning and revitalization. The impacts of GIS use on the community planning practices makes problems and strengthens a tension between incorporation and autonomy.
