Environmental inequalities: literature review and proposals for new directions in research and theory
Article Abstract:
The protests surrounding the construction of a toxic waste dump in a minority county of North Carolina in 1978 opened the new sociological field of environmental racism. Research in this field has been performed by scholars from many disciplines but largely involves American and contemporary situations. The field needs to explore the links between environmental racism and social inequalities as an integral part of modern societies. This approach may lead to social change by giving people something to unify around.
