'There's this thing in our family': predictive testing and the construction of risk for Huntington Disease
Article Abstract:
Issues concerning the social construction of hereditary risk for Huntington's Chorea are discussed. Interviews with 21 families reveal the social and biographical factors considered by families when discussing risk and its modification through predictive genetic testing. Mendelian theories of inheritance prove inadequate for describing the fluctuating meaning of risk within the family.

Doing the right thing: genetic risk and responsibility
Article Abstract:
Issues concerning the responsibility felt towards their families by women attending genetics clinics. The findings of an interview study of women attending genetic counselling for breast/ovarian cancer indicate that by attending genetic counselling these women forgo their right not to know their risks and undertake risk management practices with possible iatrogenic consequences.

Managing courtesy stigma: the case of Alzheimer's disease
Article Abstract:
Issues are discussed regarding the public perceptions and stigma suffered by family members of Alzheimer's disease patients. A study finds that both primary caregivers and other family members report stigma, but that many of the family members interviewed did not experience stigma and seemed not to be concerned about trying to avoid it.
