NASA USING REGION-FREE DVD

Article Abstract:

Sony had planned a media and VIP junket to the launching of Space Shuttle Discovery to accompany its $1,500 FX1 portable DVD players to the International Space Station, but learned belatedly that station personnel already had players which had been modified to circumvent regional coding on discs. NASA had previously contracted with Techtronics, a UK company, to reconfigure portable DVD players for use in space; the removal of Region-1 coding was necessary due to the station's multinational crew, although it clearly does violate DVD license agreements. Whether the region-code hack violates the Digital Millennium Copyright Act is less clear. Regional coding is a subset of DVD's Content Scrambling System (CSS) encryption, which prevents unauthorized copying of discs. Sony says it should not be held responsible for end-user modifications and has launched a poll to award prizes to select the CD and DVD library for the ISS.

SONY EXPANDS DTV, DVD, SACD LINES

Article Abstract:

Sony plans to market DTV sets with integrated ATSC decoders, expand its DVD-Video line to include models with Super Audio CD (SACD) playback and offer less-expensive standalone SACD players. Uncertainty over standards had held back the DTV market and limited innovation. The new DTV models include the $4,00 34W direct-view unit and rear-projection units priced at $5,000 and $6,000. Each will include dual FireWire digital connectors and DTCP copy protection.
