An industry on a wave

Article Abstract:

Spanish shipyards have steadily and increasingly flourished since roughly 1996 and did particularly well in 1997. General market conditions have contributed somewhat to the industry's consistent success since 1997, and the exchange rate of the peseta against the US dollar has been a considerable factor behind the prosperity of Spanish shipyards. However, the biggest reason why Spain's shipbuilding/repair business is thriving is because shipowners are getting the best value for their money in terms of low costs but high quality work and prompt delivery times.

Specialisation is the key

Article Abstract:

The strength of the British pound sterling has made competition with foreign shipbuilders difficult for the UK shipbuilding industry, especially in the area of simpler ships. However, the country's shipbuilders continue to remain confident that they can survive the competition in high-value tonnage because of the specialization required in the more complex designs. The establishment of a new Shipbuilding Forum is expected to bring positive change to the industry.
