If USS Buys National Steel
Article Abstract:
United States Steel Corp. (USS) is expected to take over National Steel Corp. The merger requires Justice Department clearance, due to antitrust implications. The effect of the takeover upon steel buyers is clear - USS will be a full-line supplier of alloy and flat-rolled steel for almost any application. National Intergroup will become a holding company after the takeover. The takeover is part of USS's corporate restructuring strategy. Inefficient operations are being shut down, new facilities are being built and some existing facilities are receiving upgradings.

When steel snaps like carrots
Article Abstract:
Brittle fracture (BF) is a well-known phenomenon in steel wherein a crack is propagated very rapidly, even at low stress levels that result in a structure breaking in two. BF has two forms, classical and post-yield BF. Classical BF is caused by a cleavage crystalline mechanism. This type of BF rarely occurs in ships because of improved quality of steel and welding. Post-yield BF is caused by local overloading or fatigue. To prevent BF, grade A mild steel should be protected by sufficient crack arrest plating worked into a ship's cross-section.
