Owners cut costs to weather downturn
Article Abstract:
The world's container shipping industry has been heavily hit by the recent spate of regional financial crises. With the world economy growing by only 2% in 1998, industry insiders are predicting a continuing consolidation of the industry that will result in the elimination of the weaker players. Major shipping industry players, whose main concern is the imbalance of east/west trade, expressed confidence that the present belt tightening measures and consolidations will be good for the industry in the long run.

Ship handling without the risk
Article Abstract:
The Officer of the Watch (OOW) training software uses simulation in ship handling training. It is perfect for long distance learning because its interactive expert system provides effective training even without an instructor's presence. It also allows instructors to evaluate student performance based on records and logs taken by the program. OOW reveals watchkeeping styles of each student and focuses on skills acquisition.
