Shipbuilding addresses specialized sectors: the importance of shipping as a primary method of trading and communicating in Norway has helped the development of an integrated marine industry
Article Abstract:
The maritime industry in Norway is important in trading and communication and has a strong group of shipowners, shipbuilders and associated firms. In some cases air and sea offer the only routes to the northern and many western coasts. The major shipbuilder in Norway is Kvaerner and is benefiting from financial packages from overseas governments. The group acquired the Govan shipyard in Scotland and the Kleven operation in Norway. It also gained approval to acquire Masa-Yards and most major newbuilding projects are undertaken at Kvaerner-Masa Yards. Specialist yards include Mjellem & Karlsen in Bergen and Sterkoder in Kristiansund.

New marine system reduces satcom costs
Article Abstract:
The Inmarsat-M satellite communication system offers lower equipment costs and call charges. The development of the new system came after criticisms that the Inmarsat-A system was too expensive while the Inmarsat-C system was insufficient to address the communications needs of some coastal commercial vessels. Although Inmarsat-M has no telex capability and transmits data 90 seconds slower than the Inmarsat-A, maunfacturers remain confident that it can successfully corner a significant share of the small vessels communications market.

Exhaust controls await international law
Article Abstract:
A review of current and proposed international rules governing marine engine exhaust emissions is presented. While shipowners will not be affected by emission limits on engine types until the end of the 1990s, consulting engineers claim they already have proven solutions. Some insights are provided by consulting engineering firm Ricardo of the UK. Curremt areas of activity in this aspect are also presented.
