Yards battle against strong yen
Article Abstract:
The strengthening of the yen may put Japan's shipbuilding industry at risk. If the strong currency undermines the competitiveness of the shipyards and if foreign competitors expand their operations, Japanese shipbuilders will be pushed out of the ship replacement market which is expected to experience explosive growth in the middle and latter part of the 1990s. If this happens, the Japanese shipyards may no longer be considered a major world player by the end of the market boom.

Shipping lines chart foreign waters
Article Abstract:
The troubles of the Japanese shipping industry stem largely from the continued appreciation of the yen. In addition to increased foreign competition and the questionable performance of advanced economies, the industry has to contend with a considerable gap in yen-dollar exchange rates that is undermining their profitability. The continued survival of carriers will depend on their ability to reduce costs and match the prices of their Asian rivals.

Shipbuilders determined to reduce costs
Article Abstract:
Japan's shipbuilding industry may be able to offset the adverse effects of low prices for newbuildings and increasing competition from South Korea through cost-cutting. Insiders are relying on the newfound cost-consciousness of shipyards to give the industry a competitive edge over their foreign rivals. Many shipbuilders are now trying to stay competitive by cutting the costs of labor, materials and equipment.
