Moving in harmony with the body: the teaching legacy of Margaret H'Doubler, 1916-1926

Article Abstract:

The first stage of Margaret HEDoublerEs development as a dance educator during the period 1916 to 1926 is closely illustrated. An analysis of her development along with her peers and colleagues in the field provides contexts to evaluate her subsequent contributions to dance in American education.

Toward a definition of moving-picture dance

Article Abstract:

An attempt is made to explain moving-picture dance by offering a philosophical characterization of this field of activity. The moving-picture makers have devoted admirable amounts of effort and imagination to portraying dance in or through media as diverse as film, video, and computer animation.

The lives and labors of the black jazz dance teachers of the 1920s studied through extensive archival work is presented along with the fact that their professional choices were ultimately both empowering and disempowering to them.
