Fine-scale genetic structure and clinal variation in Silene acaulis despite high gene flow

Article Abstract:

Fine-scale genetic structure and clinal variation occur in Silene acaulis, a plant that grows above the treeline in Colorado, despite high gene flow. The plant's spatial genetic structure at various elevations on a mountain in central Colorado has been analyzed after it was predicted that the patchy distribution, along with limited gene flow, would result in marked genetic differentiation as space varied within and between populations, but results were contradictory to a degree with evidence for patchy genetic structure within populations seen with evidence for high interpopulation gene flow

Pleistocene colonization of afro-alpine 'sky islands' by the arctic-alpine Arabis alpina

Article Abstract:

The colonization history of Arabis alpina in the afro-alpine region based on chloroplast DNA sequences from the high mountains of Ethiopia and tropical East Africa is investigated. The analysis has indicated that the cooler periods of the Pleistocene have played a crucial role for the dispersal of afro-alpine plants between isolated mountain tops, but occasional long-distance dispersal also occurred among the isolated 'sky islands', possibly by wind or birds.
