High resolution mapping of genetic factors affecting abdominal bristle number in Drosophila melanogaster

Article Abstract:

Genetic experiments enable the mapping of factors in Drosophila melanogaster that influence the response to 25 generations of divergent selection from a large base population for abdominal bristle number. Derivation of isogenic chromosome substitution lines and in situ hybridization of polymorphic neutral roo transposable elements are involved in the mapping. Mapping of the factors influencing bristle number and relative viability of the chromosome recombinant isogenic lines using the multiple regression technique helps identify two factors on the X chromosome and five on the third chromosome that affect abdominal bristle number.

Patterns of naturally occurring restriction map variation, dopa decarboxylase activity variation and linkage disequilibrium in the DdC gene region of Drosophila melanogaster

Article Abstract:

The DdC region encompassing 65 kilobases in the second chromosome of Drosophila melanogaster was surveyed in 46 individuals from five populations of fruit flies. Thirteen polymorphic restriction sites were discovered out of the 69 scored. Heterozygosity, insertions and deletions in the region were determined. The variation in the restriction sites observed were consistent with normal distribution in neutral populations, however, insertions and deletions were significantly less frequent. Variation in dopa decarboxylase activity and linkage disequilibrium were also reported.

Effects of a transposable element insertion on alcohol dehydrogenase expression in Drosophila melanogaster

Article Abstract:

The RI42 allele was examined to determine possible factors that explain the relationship between alcohol dehydrogenase (Adh) expression reduction and copia insertions. The insertion exhibited a substantial effect on Adh activity levels and on proximal and distal transcript levels. A singular long terminal repeat produced no effect in adults but showed a minimal effect in larvae development.
