Identification and characterization of a spinal muscular atrophy-determining gene

Article Abstract:

Physical and genetic mapping of the genes for spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) in SMA patients reveal that chromosome 5q13 consists of a gene, the survival motor neuron (SMN) gene, in the critical region, which determines the SMA. The critical region lies with the 140 kb telomeric region of chromosome 5q13. SMA patients either display disrupted SMN gene or completely lack the SMN gene and those containing the genes display deleterious mutations. The mutations confirm that SMN functions as the SMA-determining gene.

Novel major bacterial candidate division within a municipal anaerobic sludge digester

Article Abstract:

A 16S rRNA probe targeting WWE1 16S rRNA sequences is designed and validated by both fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH) and dot blot hybridization (DBH). The results suggest that WWE1 representative microorganism are rods of filamentous shaped, while DBH shows that WWE1 accounts for 12% of the total bacterial rRNA within the anaerobic digester.

Molecular evidence for novel planctomycete diversity in a municipal wastewater treatment plant

Article Abstract:

Anoxic and aerobic basins and an anaerobic digestor of a municipal wastewater treatment plant are examined for the presence of novel planctomycete-like diversity. The results indicate that activated sludge contains very diverse representatives of this group, which grow under aerobic and anoxic conditions and even under anaerobic conditions.
