Impact of bacterial biomass on contaminant sorption and transport in a subsurface soil

Article Abstract:

The impact of the bacterial biomass on the sorption and transport of three solutes (Ca-45, naphthalene and quinoline) in a sub-surface soil is studied. Sorption and transport of the compound during steady, saturated water flow conditions through homogeneously packed, sterile or bacterium-inoculated soil columns are measured by using miscible displacement techniques. Negligible biofacilitated transport is indicated by the minimal absorption of solutes. Transport is enhanced by the alteration of the soil surfaces upon addition of bacterial biomass which reduced sorption.

Spatial analysis of archaeal community structure in grassland soil

Article Abstract:

The scale-associated differences in archaeal communities in managed and unimproved grassland soils are determined. The findings demonstrate the care required when workers attempt to obtain a representative picture of microbial community structure in the soil environment.

Vertical distribution of the free-living amoeba population in soil under desert shrubs in the Negev Desert, Israel

Article Abstract:

The effect of desert shrubs on the dynamics of free-living amoebae in arid soils is examined by designing a field study. Soil samples from 0- to 50-cm depths are collected at 10-cm intervals in each of the four seasons.
