Inherited predisposition to thrombosis

Article Abstract:

Inherited predisposition to thrombosis is a result of combinations of mutations in two or more genes coding for proteins involved in blood clotting. Although a number of genes have been identified with the prothrombotic condition, the nature of gene interactions to produce clinical symptoms are still unclear. The current problems and strategies for genetic analysis of inherited thrombosis are reviewed using a single example, protein kinase C deficiency.

Tumor suppressing pathways

Article Abstract:

Tumor suppressor genes play an important role in colon carcinogenesis. These genes helped identify intermediates in the progression pathway called the adenomatous polyp. Observations concerning the frequent loss of heterozygosity of DNA marker loci on chromosome 18q in colon tumors have also been associated with the genes. Moreover, tumor repressor genes function as an intermediate in the discrimination between initiating events and progression events.

Self-promotion? Intimate connections between APC and prostaglandin H synthase-2

Article Abstract:

Evidence suggests that adenoidal pharyngeal conjunctival (APC) virus loss is connected to increased prostaglandin H synthase-2 (COX-2) transcription. Research shows that COX-2 reaction products contribute to tumorigenesis. Data also reveal that COX-2 expression occurs early in the APC pathway of colon neoplasia, indicating the efficacy of drugs inhibiting COX-2 in the chemoprevention of colon cancer.
