Major gene effects during weed evolution: phenotypic characters cosegregate with alleles at the Ray Floret Locus in Senecio vulgaris L. (Asteraceae)

Article Abstract:

A codominant marker using ray floret length was investigated to test for associations with phenotypic characters in two F2 progenies derived from crosses between the nonweedy, late-developing Senecio vulgaris subspecie denticulatus and its weedy, early developing derivative subspecie vulgaris. Directional dominance for a reduction of vegetative and reproductive structures was expressed by loci situated near the ray floret locus. These indicated evidence for past directional selection acting on these characters.

Quantitative genetics of leaf morphology in Crepis tectorum ssp. pumila (Asteraceae)

Article Abstract:

Small numbers of important genes can govern extreme differences in morphology and may influence the rate of evolution of new adaptions in natural populations. A new study of Crepis tectorum ssp. pumila uses the factorial mating design to investigate the genetic variation in leaf morphology in a population that appears to have a dominant gene causing deep lobed leaves. Details of the study are presented.

The genetic basis of floral variation in Senecio jacobaea (Asteraceae)

Article Abstract:

Research is presented concerning the use of hybrid progenies of between- and within-morph crosses of the ragwort, Senecio jacobaea, to investigate the plant's patterns of segregation. The direction of dominance is discussed.
