Mitochondria are excitable organelles capable of generating and conveying electrical and calcium signals

Article Abstract:

Mitochondrial suspensions were subjected to fixed sucrose osmotic pulses before and at different stages of the mCICR spike to determine the role of mitochondria in intracellular CICR processes. Results reveal that mitochondria are excitable organelles which are able to generate and convey electrical and calcium signals. Furthermore, the Ca2+ fluxes during mCICR are results of mitochondrial depolarization spike induced by the permeability transition pore opening.

Snapshots of ARF1: implications for mechanisms of activation and inactivation

Article Abstract:

Data on the structures of ADP-ribosylation factor 1 (ARF1) suggest that the control mechanisms that mediate vesicle coat formation may be more complex than previously theorized. Analysis indicates that ARF1 action involves a pathway that includes a trimer complex formed by ARF, ARF GTPase activating protein (ARF GAP) and coatomer subunits and other, yet unidentified, complexes that solve the problem of the insolubility of myristoylated ARF.

Structures of two repeats of spectrin suggest models of flexibility

Article Abstract:

A study of the structure of spectrin, a vital component of the cytoskeleton, regarding its flexibility attributes has been conducted. Two dominant features were observed. These include a conformational rearrangement that results in a movement of the loop's position and a number of varying degrees of bending at the linker region. The bending and conformational rearrangement models provide new avenues for the study of spectrin flexibility.
