Organic solvent tolerance and antibiotic resistance increased by overexpression of marA in Escherichia coli

Article Abstract:

Overexpression of the soxS or robA gene have been found to induce in several Escherichia coli strains the acquisition of higher organic solvent tolerance and also enhanced resistance to a number of antibiotics. The marRAB genes were isolated from a Kohara lambda phage clone and cyclohexane-tolerant mutant strain OST3408. A substitution of serine for arginine at position 73 was observed in the coding region of marR of OST3408 and named marR08. marR08 was found to be responsible for the cyclohexane-tolerant phenotype.

Impact of rpoS deletion on Escherichia coli biofilms

Article Abstract:

Research was conducted to examine the effect of rpoS deletion on Escherichia coli biofilms. It was hypothesized that slow growth is an essential aspect of bacterial physiology within biofilms. Two strains of Escherichia coli and its isogeic derivvative were used to test the hypothesis. Results indicate that deletion of rpoS greatly reduces the ability of E coli to grow in biofilms but has little impact on the growth of planktonic bacteria.

Genetic structure of natural populations of Escherichia coli in wild hosts on different continents

Article Abstract:

Researchers describe the genetic diversity of 202 strains of E. coli from 81 mammalian species from 30 families and 14 orders in Australia and the Americas. Until this report, most strains were isolated from humans or zoo animals.
