Pinning down positional information: dorsal-ventral polarity in the Drosophila embryo

Article Abstract:

The important role of a stable extracellular gradient to explain dorsal-ventral patterning in the Drosophila embryo is evaluated. Although it is widely recognized that morphogen gradients can detail sequences of various cell types within tissues, the idea of making a stable morphogen gradient by using diffusible components is impossible to accomplish. Furthermore, it is difficult to make a convincing concentration gradient of protein morphogen that is stable to temperature changes and other environmental factors without settling some of the elements in space.

Passover: a gene required for synaptic connectivity in the giant fiber system of Drosophila

Article Abstract:

Mutations in Passover (Pas) flies results in the creation of a new gene family in which the Drosophila ogre protein produced is 47% identical and the C. elega Unc-7 protein produced is 33% identical. This change, expressed in the fly's inability to jump in answer to a light-off stimulus, is cloned from a P element-induced gene and expresses itself in the nervous system of the adult fly and during synaptic activation of giant fibres (FG) in the pupa stage, consequently affecting the response systems of the flies.

Dachshund and eyes absent proteins form a complex and function synergistically to induce ectopic eye development in Drosophila

Article Abstract:

Nuclear proteins encoded by the eyeless, dachshund, and eyes absent genes, are necessary for eye development in Drosophila. The formation of ectopic compound eyes may be induced by misexpression of eyless or dachshund. It is shown that dachshund and eyes absent genes induce ectopic retinal development synergistically, regulating the expression of each other. The proteins are shown to physically interact via conserved domains.
