Probiotics affect virulence-related gene expression in Escherichia coli O157:H7

Article Abstract:

Autoinducer-2 (AI-2) production and the expression of several virulence-related genes in Escherichia coli O157:H7 (EHEC O157) grown in the absence and presence of a Lactobacillus acidophilus-secreted molecule is discussed. Results suggest that Lactobacillus acidophilus La-5 possesses strategies for interfering with quorum sensing (QS) regulation of food-borne pathogens such as EHEC O157.

Kluyveromyces lactis LAC4 promoter variants that lack function in bacteria but retain full function in K. lactis

Article Abstract:

A series of LAC4 promoter variants is created by targeted mutagenesis of three DNA sequences, PBI, PBII, and PBIII that resemble the Escherichia coli Pribnow box element of bacterial promoters. Mutation of PBI reduced the bacterial expression of a reporter protein by approximately 87% whereas mutation of PBII and PBIII has little effect on green fluorescent protein expression.
