Relationship of species-specific filament levels to filamentous bulking in activated sludge

Article Abstract:

The relationship between species-specific filament levels and filamentous bulking in activated sludge is investigated using a statistic-based quantification method that helps in estimating the biomass of specific filaments using 16S rRibonucleic acid (rRNA) -targeted fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH) probes. The effectiveness of the FISH method in understanding species-specific filamentous bulking is demonstrated.

Molecular characterization and evolution of anthropod-pathogenic Rickettsiella bacteria

Article Abstract:

The 16S rRNA gene sequences of three crustacean Rickettsiella armadillidii strains were determined. Rickettsiella appear to form a monophyletic group that diverged from Coxiella bacteria, therefore the genus Rickettsiella as a whole should be classified among the Grammaproteobacteria instead of the Alphaproteobacteria.

Molecular detection of epiphytic Acaryochloris spp. on marine macroalgae

Article Abstract:

PCR- denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis is used to develop a molecular method for detecting the epiphyte community on marine macroalgae. Red macroalgae as well as green and brown macroalgae are found to contain two phylotypes of Acuryochloris, a chlorophyll d-containing cyanobacterium.
