Telomerase: Not just for the elongation of telomeres

Article Abstract:

Telomerase RNA component (TERC) and telomerase reverse transcriptase (TERT) function together to elongate telomeres and to protect chromosomal ends. Some findings have discovered that over expression of telomerase's TERT subunit promoted epidermal stem-cell mobilization, hair-growth and stem cell proliferation without changes in length of telomeres, which is independent and is operated through a mechanism other than telomere elongation.

On the origin of telomeres: A glimpse at the pre-telomerase world

Article Abstract:

The primordial terminal structures (telomeres) of linear chromosomes in eukaryotic nuclei were derived from selfish elements, which caused the linearization of the ancestral circular genome and helped in solving the emerged problems. The molecular fossils of such elements were identified in phylogenetically distant genomes and were shown to generate terminal arrays of tandem repeats.

Chromosome rearrangements resulting from telomere dysfunction and their role in cancer

Article Abstract:

Telomeres play a vital role in protecting the ends of chromosomes and preventing chromosome fusion. The loss of a single telomere can result in instability in multiple chromosomes, and generate many of the types of rearrangements commonly associated with human cancer.
