Opposing transcriptional outputs of Hedgehog signaling and Engrailed control compartmental cell sorting at the Drosophila A/P boundary

Article Abstract:

Opposing transcriptional outputs of Hedgehog (Hh) signaling and Engrailed (En) control compartmental cell sorting at the Drosophila anterior (A)/posterior (P) boundary are discussed. The wing imaginal disc is divided into nonintermingling sets of cells, the A and P compartments and A cells must get the Hh signal to segregate from P cells. The Hh signaling controls the segregation by a Cubitus interruptus (Ci)-mediated transcriptional response

Conversion of an extracellular Dpp/BMP morphogen gradient into an inverse transcriptional gradient

Article Abstract:

Research has been conducted on Dpp/BMP morphogen in Drosophila. The authors have investigated the molecular events leading to Dpp/BMP morphogen primary response in Drosophila, and they report that this morphogen establishes finely tuned read-out of transcriptional repression.

schnurri is required for Drosophila dpp signaling and encodes a zinc finger protein similar to the mammalian transcription factor PRDII-BF1

Article Abstract:

Analyses of the genetic components of the gene schnurri (shn) revealed that is plays a role in dpp signaling during Drosophila development. Genetic epistatis showed that shn encodes putative mammalian zinc finger transcription factors similar to those found in vertebrate proteins. This suggests that shn may act as a nuclear target in dpp signaling to regulate the expression of dpp-responsive genes.
