A Perturbation Scheme to Improve Hilliers' Solution to the Facilities Layout Problem

Article Abstract:

A new heuristic for solving the quadratic assigment problem is presented. Problems include facilities layout, wiring diagrams, and traveling salesman route selection. The Revised Hillier Procedure incorporates certain features of the Hillier Procedure. It is combined with 3-way and 4-way exchanges that extend the neighborhood for the solution search. Results are compared with other methods. Flow charts illustrate the algorithm triple and the Revised Hillier Procedure. Tables contain numerical results.

Techniques for Facilities Layout: Deciding Which Pairs of Activities Should Be Adjacent

Article Abstract:

The problem of laying out the facilities of some systems in terms of specifying which activities are to be adjacent is surveyed. Each pair of facilities has a closeness rating which represents the desirability that they are located adjacently. Ratings are usually proportional to the flow of goods or people between facilities. The aim of the layout analyst is to design a system so that the sum of the ratings of adjacent pairs is maximized as this represents travel saved.

A perturbation scheme to improve Hillier's solution to the facilities layout problem

Article Abstract:

The quadratic assignment problem is used in facilities layout, wiring diagram configuration and route selection problems. It has been deemed the best buy approach to these situations. However, the heuristic model developed by Hillier can be improved by extending the area covered by the model.
