An air of mystery surrounds the abrupt resignation of Biogen chief

Article Abstract:

Executives at the Cambridge, Mass.-based Biogen Inc. insist that James R. Tobin's unexpected resignation is due to personal reasons only and not anything to do with the company. Tobin left his president, CEO and board seat on Tuesday, 12/22/98, effective immediately, posts he held since only 1997. The firm's chairman, James L. Vincent, will pick up those reins for now. Since the resignation was voluntary, there will be no severance pay, but Tobin's stock options could come to more than $40 million.
