B.A.T. merger plans approved by court; insurer is set back

Article Abstract:

BAT Industries PLC's merger plans have been approved by a High Court in Great Britain. The court's approval will allow BAT's merging of its financial-services arm with Zurich Group to push through. BAT will also be spinning off its tobacco companies. The transaction was unveiled in October 1997. Blue Cross & Blue Shield of America protested the deal, claiming that it might hamper its ability to win US policyholder compensation in tobacco litigation cases.
