Ciena to acquire 2 telecom firms in stock deals

Article Abstract:

Ciena Corp. is to acquire two telecommunications equipment companies for about $980 million in stock. The two corporations are Lightera Networks Inc. and Omnia Communications Inc. It seems that this acquisition is reflective of the surge of acquisitions that have been occurring lately in this market. Also, Ciena Corp. will now have a wider range of technologies in order to become a leader in making fibre optic networks.

Alcatel to acquire Xylan for $2 billion; tender offer at $37 a share planned, as French firm expects a second deal

Article Abstract:

Xylan Corp. of Calabasas, Calif., is the latest Alcatel acquisition, for $2 billion, but it's not the last. The French firm is planning another such announcement in just one week. It is all to boost its U.S. share of the burgeoning high speed data communications industry. The Xylan acquisition will allow Alcatel to have its own products to sell rather than reselling competitors' products.
