Computers: Upkeep Reminder

Article Abstract:

Preventive maintenance could save approximately twenty-five percent of the one billion dollars presently spent by users to repair computer systems, according to Paul Davis of PerfectData Company. A weekly cleaning of the disk drive is advisable. This can be done with a head cleaning kit which retails for about thirty dollars. Floppy disks need to be properly handled and stored to keep unnecessary dirt and dust out of the computer and prevent damage to the disk itself. Relocation of the computer should be kept to a minimum. Cleaning solution can be purchased to maintain the printer head. A static charge due to electrostatic buildup in carpeting and furniture can be strong enough to damage microcircuits, but can also be prevented. Computer maintenance should be performed twice a year, even on minicomputers. A drawing is included.

Used Computers Find Homes

Article Abstract:

Brian Keenan founded the International Computer Orphanage (ICO) to contend with the over 600,000 microcomputer systems abandoned after a year because owners outgrow the systems. Used computers are brokered through ICO at discounts ranging from fifty to seventy percent. Franchises sell for $25,000 and Keenan has made two million dollars in sales in 1984. A photograph of Keenan at his Computer Adoption Center is shown.
