Contracting out it out at Hamersley

Article Abstract:

Hamersley Iron Proprietary Ltd has revolutionized the iron mining industry in Australia since 1993, and will do so again in the late 1990s with the abandonment of its mining and earthmoving outsourcing. Efficiency, risk and asset transfer, and lower capital costs are some of the reasons that mines have outsourced in the past. However, Hamersley contends that some costs of mining can be lowered by not using outside contractors at some mines.

High excitement after iron-making triumph

Article Abstract:

Australia's Rio Tinto has successfully proven the efficacy of the HIsmet iron-making process. The process allows the use of low-grade raw materials, such as iron ore fines, to produce high grade iron feedstock. Pollution problems are done away with because coke ovens and sinter plants are not used and there is no residue. The process was tested between 1968 and 1998 with full scale development expected by the year 2000.
