Evaluating the applicability of the Miles and Snow typology in a regulated public utility environment

Article Abstract:

The Miles and Snow organizational process, structure and strategy model approach cannot effectively be applied in the analysis of pure competition and is not applicable to the analysis of pure monopolies. It is most useful in evaluating industries that demonstrate conditions of oligopoly or monopolistic competition. Generic strategy models can usefully be applied to the regulated industries, particularly those on the verge of fundamental change, such as open competition. The UK electricity distribution and supply industry (ESI) is studied using the Miles and Snow model.
