NextWave sues FCC over licenses won in bidding

Article Abstract:

San Diego, CA-based NextWave Personal Communications Inc. sued the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) for $3 billion. The company won auctions to supply new wireless services but could not pay for its bids. The company owes the government $4.2 billion for 63 wireless licenses bought at a May 1996 auction. The company has now filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. The lawsuit against the FCC was part of the filing.

Sales of Apple's iMac Blossom, retailers say

Apple Computer Inc.'s new iMac computer model is reporting strong sales in its first few days on the market. The model may also be aiding Apple in its attempts to attract new customers. The company has been trying to increase its long-struggling market share. During the week of August 9-16, 1998, Apple reported that it received over 150,000 advanced orders for the computer, which is priced at $1,299.

Cisco, Pirelli explore pact for fiber gear

Article Abstract:

Cisco Systems is in talks with Pirelli SpA. The two are discussing the formation of a joint venture. 60%, or $1.93 bil of Pirelli's 1999 total revenue came from its fiber optics equipment unit, the Cables & Systems Sector. Cisco has sought further fiber optic acquisitions, but has been deterred by market valuations it sees as excessive.
