Preventing Down-Time

Article Abstract:

Avant-Garde Computing Incorporated is a company in Cherry Hill, New Jersey, founded by Timothy P. Ahlstrom and F. Morgan Lamarche. It has developed the Net-Alert system, designed to monitor transactions within computer systems in order to prevent system failure by anticipating problems. Sixty organizations with the largest computer networks, such as Merrill Lynch, Pierce, Fenner and Smith, Air France, and the Library of Congress have installed Net-Alert. Merrill Lynch paid 3.8 million dollars for its package in December 1983. Estimated sales of fourteen million dollars were made by Avant-Garde in fiscal year ending April 30, 1984. Avant-Grade went public in June 1983 at sixteen dollars per share. A photograph of Ahlstrom and Lamarche is included.

Selling Themselves Down the River

Article Abstract:

Jayco Co. is a $40 million manufacturer of recreational vehicles. The company has an unusual incentive program for its dealers. Every year, between September and February (the time when sales usually sag), Jayco runs a contest. The dealers who have the most sales win a trip. This year the trip is to Austria, with stops in Vienna and Salzburg. The 270 dealers are divided into five groups to give both large and small dealers an equal chance. The opportunity to win a trip proved to be a powerful sales incentive, and the highly visable nature of the prize has special appeal. The Austrian trip itself has been carefully planned, and will include a grand ball at a palace in Vienna.
