Privatization of telecommunications clears political roadblock in Turkey

Article Abstract:

Turkey's telecommunications monopoly undergoes privatization after Prime Minister Tansu Ciller wins her struggle against her junior coalition partner, the Social Democrats. The Social Democrats rescinded their opposition after bribery allegations against the party were unveiled. The privatization agreement holds that 49 percent of the telecommunications company will be sold for as much as $15 billion. Ciller is motivated to undertake the privatization by Turkey's need for economic reform to counter a $5 billion budget deficit, 73 percent inflation and economic dominance by the government. The framework for privatization includes splitting the most profitable part of the monopoly, the Postal Telephone and Telegraph, into postal and telecommunications entities.
