The MS brand: does it mean master-slave?

Article Abstract:

Most computer users still have a favorable opinion of Microsoft Corp. but, as opinion polls suggest, that support is declining as Microsoft's brand name products are seen as enslaving. In a 1999 New York Times/CBS News poll, 60% of computer users had a favorable opinion of Microsoft, compared to 67% in 1998 and 73% in 1997. Marketing specialist Susan Fournier applies relationship theory to brand name products. Consumers view the products of Harley Davidson Inc. as "best friend", while Microsoft's are seen as "master-slave," both freeing and enslaving, saving time and consuming time.
