The debt-dollar dilemma: being prudent has, perversely, hurt the dollar. A new plan, to consolidate Australian government bonds, might help

Article Abstract:

Salomon Smith Barney has prepared a report for the Australian government in which it is proposed that all state and federal government debt should be consolidated into a single body, thus removing the A$74 billion semi-government bond market. It is argued that federal government bonds represent only 0.45% of the global bond market, but this would rise to around 1% if semi-government bonds were linked with federal raisings.

Globalisation: Australia's second chance

Article Abstract:

Australian business enterprises have failed to become international, with a few notable exceptions, such as Rupert Murdoch's News Corp. Large companies like GM and Nike have moved into foreign countries and succeeded by conforming to the local culture. Managers need to take risks to build up volume sales as profit margins shrink.
