African-American encyclopedia has rich roots

Microsoft, in collaboration a team led by Harvard University professors Henry Louis Gates Jr and Kwame Anthony Appiah, is preparing the Encarta Africana multimedia encyclopedia for a 1999 release. A CD-ROM version of Encarta Africana, an encyclopedia dedicated to spanning the black experience, is scheduled to debut in Jan 1999 for approximately $50, after a $20 rebate. Plans call for Encarta Africana to offer more than 3,000 articles and more than 2,500 various types of multimedia entries. Gates said he hopes the encyclopedia will raise technological awareness in the black community and place more computers in mostly African-American neighborhoods. Perseus Book Co likely will publish a print version of Encarta Africana later in 1999.

Pushed by states, America Online agrees to refunds in Internet jam

Article Abstract:

America Online (AOL) has agreed to spend millions to provide credits and refunds to users that have encountered problems with network traffic jams during Dec 1996 and Jan 1997. The announcement was made in response to lawsuit threats made by the state attorneys general of three dozen states. The states' attorneys general and executives from AOL concurred that the agreement would include subscribers from all over the country. The attorneys general had threatened to sue AOL for deceptive business practices, based on the company's aggressive marketing campaign and then its failure to provide the service it has advertised. AOL's decision to refund its customers is being seen by the states as an important step in consumer protection.
