Analysis of the effect of external change on the management of business schools within the higher education sector

Article Abstract:

Business schools in the UK have adopted similar structural approaches in response to external changes such as funding cuts. These approaches are primarily based on hierarchy, with standardized decision-making procedures, communications and committee proceedings. Increased standardization, however, has been associated with a greater need for administrative support and disciplinary action.

Academic governance can be improved through role redefinition for school governors and chief education officers. School governors should assume representational responsibilities and act as a communication link between agencies. Chief education officers should take on supervisorial activities and perform ceremonial and oversight functions.
