A fork in the IMF's road: the fund has a credibility problem that cannot be dithered away

Article Abstract:

The IMF's inability to aid Mexico in its economic problems contrasts greatly with its decision to provide funding for Russia even though economic and social conditions are not good. The IMF needs to evaluate its management and role in the economies of nations to be of help.

Le monde sans Michel

Article Abstract:

Michel Camdessus has been the International Monetary Fund's (IMF's) managing director for nearly 13 years, and he plans to leave this post by mid-Feb 2000. The IMF has had an important role in the 1990s. It has been criticized both by the political left with arguments the the poor suffer from its policies, and the political right with arguments relating to moral hazard. The ideas of a market-based economic and macroeconomic stability as important for economic growth have become more popular, and the criticisms of the IMF are partly a public relations issue.
