Honeywell's net declines, 6,500 layoffs planned

Honeywell International Inc. posted sharp losses in its 2001 first-quarter net income. The company posted $415 million in quarterly net income, much lower than expected. Honeywell will also layoff 6,500 workers, or approximately 5% of its labor force.

EchoStar's loss narrows on growth in subscriptions

EchoStar Communications Corp. posted a narrower loss for the 2001 first-quarter. The company posted $167 million (186.7 million euros) in quarterly losses, compared to $185.1 million during the same 2000 period.

The US Food and Drug Administration is developing scientific guidelines on comparing generic drugs to their brand-name originals, thus paving the way for a generic market in the biotechnology industries. The move is expected to increase competition among drug makers and reduce prices for consumers.
