Anatomy of an attack

Article Abstract:

A number of major websites have been hit by 'distributed denia- of-service (DDOS) attacks, which had been studied for some time. They can take a number of forms such as SYN floods, UDP floods, and fraggle and smurf attacks. Single attacks were initally made using simple programs and did not receive wide publicity, but they have been developed to allow for distributed attacks, which have been possible due to lack of attention to security.

A killer app for computer chat

Article Abstract:

Bots are software robots that can chat, and they are being used to send information using the internet. Bots can provide information on printer problems, and do not become tired. They cannot answer all questions, but the range of questions that technical support staff tend to have to answer is usually limited. Neuromedia is a software company involved in this activity which claims that bots on websites can cut e-mail inquiries by up to 80%. Bots may not perform as well as humans, but they may be preferable to being kept on hold.
