A marriage without Virtue isn't easy

Article Abstract:

Turkey is holding parliamentary elections on April 18 1999 and the Democratic Left party of Bulent Ecevit appears to be almost joint leader in opinion polls, with the Virtue Party just ahead. Ecevit is standing in as prime minister, and one reason for his popularity is that he has never been the subject of corruption allegations. A coalition is likely to result from the election, and some observers argue that the Virtue and Democratic Left parties should ally to help heal divisions between Islamic and secular groups.

Trick or treat?

Article Abstract:

US elections of Nov 1998 have tended not to be influenced by the Monica Lewinsky affair, since voters have shown a lack of interest in it. The Republicans plan an advertising campaign to remind voters of the affair, but this move could backfire. The press and politicians are more concerned about the scandal than the general public. Turnout for the elections is likely to be low. The public is likely to refuse to vote, and ignore the message of the press.
