Article Abstract:

Nigeria has been ruled by the military for most of the period since 1966, except for six years of civilian rule, and there has been a civil war, and squandering of public funds by leaders. Nigeria is potentially very rich, but is affected by poverty. President Olusegun Obasanjo faces a difficult task. Debt, violence, poor infrastructure, corruption and lack of a democratic tradition all hamper his task. There is greater political freedom, and gasoline is freely avaiable, which it was not in the past, but further progress is necessary.

A tale of two giants

Article Abstract:

There are similarities between Nigeria and Indonesia, such as a large population, ethnic diversity, income from petroleum, experience of military rule, and a predominance of subsistence farmers when the two countries became independent. Illiteracy, premature death, inequality and GDP growth are indicators that show Indonesia performing better, partly because corruption has been more of a problem in Nigeria. Vast sums of petroleum revenues have been wasted in Nigeria. The political system has to be changed to tackle the problem of corruption.
